My First Semester

As the semester comes to an end, I would like to talk about my first semester here at High Point. All of my classes were fairly easy. I really enjoyed having Anthropology, I learned a lot. My design class was very interesting and it opened my eyes about my major. One of the harder classes I had was Spanish. I think the first semester went very quickly and I already made many new memories and friends. I am excited to see what comes next for me here at High Point. I think it will be a great four years and I believe I made a good decision coming here!

Being a Northerner

Coming from the North I have always loved the warmer weather. Now having been here for a semester I have gotten use to the warmer weather and wish to not go back to the North. I hate the snow and cold. I haven't been too happy with the weather here lately because to me it has seemed cold. I grew up vacationing in North Carolina, I think that had persuaded me to come to school here. I  have noticed it had always been 10-15 degrees warmer here than at home. People are also a lot nicer here than at home. Here people will hold the door open for you and will always say thank you. The pace is also slower here as well. People at home are always in a rush and tend to be grumpy. I have love this state and am happy for choosing High Point as my school. I see myself one day living here after college.

My Theme Song

A theme song I would choose for myself would be Carry Me by Kygo. It has a happy, upbeat vibe that fits my personality well. The lyrics grab me and tell me to keep moving on and to live my life. In the past year I have faced many difficulties. The difficulties have taught me to always be happy and not to take life for granite. This song speaks to the crowd to move forward and to not let anything get in your way. If something sets you back just keep moving on.

Swann v. Board

In class we had another mock trial, Swann v. board. A man named Darius Swan has a 6-year-old son assigned to go to a school in their district, known as the finger plan. Assigns kids to schools closest to their home. But he wants his kid to go to a better one. The school is supposed to accommodate the kid but he is black. School segregation was announced unconstitutional under brown v board. Schooling in white popular schools are more advanced. Black schools have limited supplies, bad buildings and less teachers. On the other side of things

Expansion on the court because they didn’t want to buss the kids. Title 4 act 1964, finance is a problem and time and traffic patterns will be an issue. Will need more gas, so more money which they don’t have. Kids will be on a bus for over an hour interrupting homework and extracurricular time.

Brown v. Board

In class we did another court case on Brown v Board. I enjoyed this case very much. A man named Oliver Brown made the argument that Topeka's racial segregation violated the Constitutions Equal Protection Clause because the city's black and white schools were not equal to each other and never could be. A point during this case was made that the school's were "substantially" equal enough to the constitution. Later on a man named Earl Warren became chief justice. He helped create integration in the schools. Another point that was made was, any child denied good education would be unlikely to succeed in life. In class on the side of the board, the point was made that there had been very many African Americans who grew up in the black schools, who grew up to be famous. This is a very good point to fight with now, but then that would not have worked. Widespread integration had begun in the 1960's and the 1970's.

Plessy v. Ferguson

In class we had a trial on the case of Plessy v. Ferguson. This case was the start of the Jim Crow era and ended the de facto segregation era. Plessy boarded a train and sat in the white mans cart. Ferguson gave him grief because he was one-eighth black. A point came up about God, saying he treats everyone the same, regardless on their skin color, making it seem that everyone does get treated the same. But this is not the case. The counter argument was that everyone is "separate but equal". Ferguson seemed like the right person at the time, but now a days that would be unjust.

The main reason for this blog is to talk about news and the class I am doing this for. The class is called Talking about Freedom. So far its gone very well and I enjoy it. We mostly talk about history which sometimes i enjoy very much. In class lately we have been talking about certain dates and have created a timeline. We made a timeline on the Civil Right era and Meta timeline era. Both are interesting. There are some court cases that i am interested in learning about. I wasn't sure if I was going to like this class or not because I don't enjoy history very much, but it became easy to learn and it wasn't a boring class at all. It was a class I didn't dread going to unlike some of my other classes. My classmates are always in a good mood and talkative. Some of my other classes are so serious and I don't enjoy that at all. I'm glad that I had the chance to take this class, I learned a lot.
